Javaid Iqbal

The Ambassador

Ambassador for Ophthalmic Public Health

Javaid graduated from City University (London) in 2001 with an honours degree in Optometry. He completed his professional College of Optometrists membership training in Derbyshire and lived for a short spell in Manchester. Since qualifying and becoming a GOC registered practitioner, he has spent most of his professional life working in Leeds.

In early 2006, after the unfortunate death of the much-loved owner-optometrist, late Mr Edwin Day, Goldwyn Opticians was taken over by Javaid. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to modernise the business in terms of products available, clinical technology and systems.

In 2013, he undertook post graduate study at the Faculty of Medicine (University of Leeds) in the area of Ophthalmic Public Health. His dissertation was on Smoking and Eye Disease.

His areas of ophthalmic interest include; Myopia, Cataracts and Age Related Macular Degeneration. Javaid attends eye health/optometry conferences throughout England and a large portion of his time is spent in continuous professional education and training.

Other than working in clinical optometric practice, his role involves overlooking business operation, developing new areas of business, dealing with suppliers and NHS England related matters.

Javaid lives with his wife and two children in north Leeds. His interests include cycling, walking, cooking, film and reading. He reads anything he can get his hands but his favourite book is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Michael Blenkinsop

Dispensing Optician

Michael is based at our Otley branch

For Michael optics runs in the blood. He is the 2nd generation of Opticians within his family. He has over 18 years experience and prides himself on his product knowledge and practical ability.

Michael particularly loves pleasing customers by using his experience to select high quality  frames and lenses to suit a customer’s personality, style and prescription. He is knowledgeable, efficient and friendly.

Outside of work Michael loves spending time with his partner and their children. He also enjoys dog walking, kickboxing, woodwork and metalwork, along with general DIY.

Rehana Hussain

Rehana Hussain

Clinical Lead

Rehana works across all our branches, Shipley, Otley, Armley and Harehills.

After graduating with an honours degree from the University of Bradford in 2002, Rehana completed her professional training in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

Over the years, she has gained extensive experience working in both multiple chain and independent practice settings.

Other than her clinical work at Goldwyn Opticians, she continues to work as clinic supervisor at the University of Bradford. Her role involves teaching and assessing undergraduate students in clinical skills.

In 2007, Rehana joined in the Vision Aid Overseas team. The outreach project involved working in the small villages of Ethiopia; refracting, detecting eye disease, training ophthalmic nurses and dispensing spectacles.

In 2016 she completed the Minor Eye Condition Services training and became a MECS accredited optometrist. Areas of her ophthalmic interest include anterior eye disease, dry eye and glaucoma. Rehana leads our dry eye clinic service.

As well as attending networking events with local ophthalmologists and allied healthcare professionals, Rehana is also keen on peer review meetings.

She lives with her husband and son in Bradford. Her hobbies include interior design, art & crafts, gardening and exploring wildlife. Her favourite book is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

Why? I can’t stand surface glare; Polaroid lens technology eliminates glare and so is perfect for driving in those early hours.

Clair Holt

Senior Optometrist

Clair works in our Otley branch

Clair completed her undergraduate training at The University of Bradford attaining her honours degree in 2009. She completed her postgraduate training at an independent optician on the Isle of Wight before qualifying with the College of Optometrists in 2010.

She remained on the Isle of Wight for several years, moving back to Yorkshire in 2012 where she worked as a domiciliary eyecare provider. She has also worked in independent practice (including Paul Verity Opticians) and as a clinical supervisor at The University of Bradford.

Clair Joined Sydney Goldwyn Opticians in 2019 working in our Otley branch where you might know her from her stint at Verity’s between 2012 and 2015. She is known for providing a professional and caring service with a thorough approach.

She is particularly interested in myopia, children’s sight tests and contact lens practice. Clair attends educational events regularly.

She lives in Otley with her husband and enjoys walking, yoga, cooking and reading.

Why? They’re lightweight, strong and flexible so great for sports, and I like their retro look.

Why? A thin and lightweight lens is essential for my strong prescription.

Nazia Saleem


Nazia completed her undergraduate training at the University of Bradford in 2014. She completed her post graduate training at Boots Opticians, becoming a member of the College of Optometrists in 2015.

Her role, other than being one of the full time optometrists, is to identify areas of improvement and implement best practice. She is a member of the College of Optometrists and is responsible for ensuring that the practice complies with up to date professional guidelines.

In 2017, Nazia travelled to Pakistan to carry out some voluntary work at a prestigious hospital where she shared her knowledge and skills with colleagues. Here she had first-hand experience of serious sight threatening eye disease which enriched her optometric practice at home.

Later in 2017, after leaving one of the optical chains, she decided to join Goldwyn Opticians. Nazia is passionate about personalised and comprehensive eyecare. She has gained a reputation for being thorough, often following up patients to monitor outcomes of referrals.

Her areas of ophthalmic interest include emergency eyecare, amblyopia and contact lens practice. Nazia regularly frequents optical conferences and peer review meetings.

She lives in Wakefield and her interests include travelling, food and reading.

Tasneem Kauser

Senior Optometrist

Tasneem is based at our Shipley branch
Tasneem completed her undergraduate training at The University of Bradford before moving to Telford for her pre registration year. She attained her professional qualifications in 2001 and has been with Verity/ Goldwyn Opticians since 2010.
Tasneem’s favourite thing about her job is being able to help people and make a difference to their lives. She also loves having the opportunity to constantly learn. Tasneem regularly attends educational and peer review events and enjoys the challenge of staying up to date with the optometric profession’s ever changing technology.
Outside of work Tasneem loves spending time with her family and going on holidays, particularly city breaks. She is also studying arabic.

Joanne Littlefair

Joanne is based in our Shipley branch
Joanne has been with Sydney Goldwyn/Verity  for 13 years and has over 15 years of retail experience.
In her spare time Joanne likes to keep fit with cycling, running and netball. Joanne also loves to spent time with family and friends.

Kathryn Prentice

Dispensing Optician

Kathryn was born and raised in Harrogate. She moved to Leeds upon getting married. While bringing up her two children she worked as a home carer on a part-time basis.

By chance, she stumbled into optics later in 2005 and fell in love with it! By joining the Goldwyn Opticians team in January 2012, she was able to follow her passion and finally qualify as a dispensing optician in 2015. Kathryn is a GOC registered practitioner and a member of ABDO.

Along with dispensing a diverse patient age-group and giving advice on latest lens technologies, her role involves procurement of stylish eyewear, regularly seeing company reps and travelling to trade shows across the country.

Her areas of interest include: Low Vision, Paediatric Dispensing and Safety Eyewear. Kathryn is doing further study in the area of low vision and is hoping in the future to collaborate with the Hospital Eye Service in Leeds to set-up a community low vision clinic in the practice.

In her spare time Kathryn enjoys spending time with her grown up family. Being an avid reader of fiction, one of her favourite novels is Post Mortem 1990 by Patricia Cornwall.

She also loves walking her dog Tyson in our beautiful English countryside.

Laura Kay Dhariwal

Dispensing Optician

Shipley branch.

Qualifications: NVQ Optical Retail, FBDO, (BA Hons Primary Education and ICT with QTS)

Experience: Laura has eight years experience in the optical industry and is new to Sydney Goldwyn.

Laura was looking for a change in career after working as a teacher and working in an opticians gave her the opportunity that she was searching for. She began as an optical assistant and gained an NVQ in Optical Retail. She knew she wanted to keep progressing so went on to earn her Dispensing Optician qualification from ABDO college in Canterbury in 2017.

Laura has worked in multiple opticians but prefers the personal service that can be provided by a local optician.

Laura grew up in the countryside on the outskirts of Leeds. She moved when she got married in 2018 and now lives locally with her husband. Together they love travelling and they have been lucky enough to visit some beautiful places, one of Laura’s favourites being Kefalonia.

Why? Rayban are an iconic brand that just about everyone recognises and there’s always a Rayban style that can suit someone. The 5228 has been a favourite of mine as it’s such a versatile style that is available in different colours and sizes.

Why? The name Carl Zeiss is synonymous with high quality lenses. Zeiss provide excellent finishes that are super durable and easy to keep clean. They provide stunning clarity which I have complete confidence in.

Mohammed Hussain

Mohammed works across all our branches; Armley, Harehills, Otley and Shipley.

Mohammed graduated with first class honours from The University of Bradford in 2014. He completed his postgraduate training at a large multiple, completing his professional qualifications in 2015. Mohammed is a member of the College of Optometrists.

Mohammed joined Sydney Goldwyn Opticians in March 2019. He has a friendly and clinically meticulous approach to eyecare. He is known for his knowledge of ocular pathology.

He is committed to ongoing learning and devotes time to keeping up to date with continuing education and training.

Mohammed lives in Bradford. He enjoys reading as well as playing and following cricket.

Stacey Varley

Stacey is based at our Armley and Harehills branches.

Qualifications: Certificate in Frame in Styling

Stacey started her career in optics in 2014. She joined Sydney Goldwyn opticians in March 2019.

Stacey is currently studying for a degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing at Bradford College.

Stacey lives in Morley and is a cat lover. Stacey is married, loves the colour green and likes baking, theatre, cinema and holidaying. Stacey is very passionate about optics!

Rebecca Thompson

Becky is based at our Otley branch

Becky is a familiar face at our Otley branch, having worked at Paul Verity/ Sydney Goldwyn Opticians for the past fourteen years. In 2008, keen to progress her knowledge she gained an Optometric Clinical Assistant university certificate from Anglia Ruskin University.

Becky particularly enjoys helping customers choose a frame to suit their personal style. She is super organised, efficient and friendly. She is also very good at teaching new contact lens patients how to handle and look after their lenses.

Previously Becky has worked in fashion, hospitality and customer service, all of which gave her the experience and skills needed to become an excellent clinical assistant.

Outside of work Becky loves spending time with her partner and two children. She also enjoys fashion, reading, cinema and quizzes.

Why? The prevencia coating adds an interesting blue reflection which compliments my frames and it’s reassuring to know I have added protection from blue violet light.

Gwyneth Fox

Dispensing Optician

Gwyneth is based at Shipley and occasionally works in Otley.

Gwyneth is a very experienced dispensing optician, having worked in the optical industry for forty-three years. She has spent the last eight years with Paul Verity/ Sydney Goldwyn Opticians as a regular locum.

Gwyneth managed a busy practice for eighteen years. After her sons graduated she wanted a change and to work nearer to home. She briefly worked for a multiple before deciding it wasn’t for her and becoming a locum dispensing optician.

Gwyneth lives locally with her partner. Her hobbies include swimming, music, calligraphy, walking and yoga.

Jackie Brierley

Jackie is based in our Shipley branch
Jackie is a familiar face at our Shipley branch having been employed by Verity/ Goldwyn Opticians since 2010. She has worked in optics for fifteen years. She has many years’ experience working in an opticians shop and even used to visit patients in their own homes to assist with domiciliary sight tests.
Jackie says she loves her job at Sydney Goldwyn Opticians and enjoys meeting new people and talking to patients.
In her spare time Jackie enjoys walking and spending time with her husband and their three grandchildren.

Amy Everett

Ophthalmic Assistant

Amy is based at our Shipley and Otley branches.

Amy is a familiar face at our Shipley branch. She has been a key part of the Paul Verity/ Sydney Goldwyn Opticians team for eleven years.

Amy shines at anything aesthetic- she loves helping patients with frame styling and fashion choices, she gets involved in our shop window dressing and merchandising and takes an interest in new frame styles.

She is also our unofficial events manager helping to organise team meet ups from group walking trips to meals out to celebrations.

Amy holds NVQs 1,2 and 3 in Hairdressing. She loves spending time with her husband and daughter. She enjoys travel, socialising and meals out as long as they don’t get in the way of watching Love Island!

Sally Lyne

Sally Lyne

Reception and Admin

Sally is based at our Otley Branch.

Sally joined our team in Otley in 2019. She is new to optics but is experienced in reception and administration work having previously held an admin position within a large accountancy firm. Sally had quite a career change in joining Sydney Goldwyn Opticians as she had previously been working in childcare. She is a paediatric first aider and holds diplomas in childcare and beauty therapy.

Sally’s favourite parts of the job are meeting patients and helping with frame choices and styling.

Sally loves to travel, her favourite destination being Mallorca which she revisited many times when her children were growing up. She is an animal lover and spends her spare time looking after her three dogs, two cats and horse, Gillan! She also loves going for meals out with her adult children.
